Second trip to Gander Green Lane in three days!

One-time FA Cup hero Matt Hanlan spared the blushes of Sutton United as he scored a late equaliser to send the tie into extra time, which failed to produce a winning goal.

Sutton (1st) and Basingstoke (20th) went into this Guardian Insurance Cup (aka Ryman League Cup) Third Round tie at opposite ends of the 22-team table.

Sutton attacked the far railway end in the first half which finished goalless. But goals weren’t far away and Sutton broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute. Joff Vansittart charged down the clearance of Basingstoke keeper Keiron Drake just outside the area and easily played the ball into an empty net as the visitors appealed for handball.

Basingstoke were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute but Paul Coombs saw his spot kick saved by Les Cleevely.

Vansittart’s goal looked like sending Sutton into the next round until the tie was turned on its head by the visitors. Basingstoke levelled things in the 81st minute when substitute David Asker converted a right-wing cross from Coombs.

Amazingly a minute later, the visitors were awarded another penalty for a foul by Andy Salako. Unlike Coombs, this time Simon Line fired past Cleeveley from the spot to put his side in front and on course for a surprise win.

However, Sutton aren’t league leaders for nothing and forced extra time with a 87th minute equaliser. David Everitt and substitute Nassim Akrour combined down the left and Hanlon converted the resulting cross with a low shot from 8 yards out.

The additional 30 minutes failed to produce a winner so the teams will replay at Basingstoke.

This was quite an interesting game at Crawley’s new Broadfield Stadium which was opened earlier this year to replace the old Town Mead ground I visited twice.

Both sides went into this Boxing Day fixture in midtable with 11th-placed Crawley Town (31 points from 22 games) three positions and five points better off than visitors Hastings United (26 points from 21 games).

Watched by an above average crowd, play was quite competitive though few clear-cut goalscoring opportunities were created. Peter Garland impressed me in midfield and defender Marc Pullen was named as Man of the Match by the sponsors.

The floodlights failed after just 10 seconds of the second half and play was suspended. Twenty minutes later they came back on only to go out again while the players were warming up. A mistake was always going to settle this tie between two Screwfix Direct League Premier Division sides, which had few clear-cut goalscoring opportunities. Visitors Bridport were the side that progressed to the next round with an 83rd minute own goal. Mike Gilbert had the misfortune to send a back header from a bouncing throughball past his advancing goalkeeper into an empty net. Bideford played over an hour with ten men after player-manager Dean Edwards was involved in a skirmish inside the Bridport area which left Brent Ireland on the ground. The former Wolves and Stafford Rangers striker received a straight red card for his part of the incident.

Tomorrow’s funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, forced a hasty rescheduling of fixtures and Hampton brought their home game against Croydon forward to this evening.

Going into the game, there was little to separate the two teams in the league table. Hampton (7 points from 5 games) stood in eight positions, two places higher on goal difference than visitors Croydon (7 points from 4 games).

Croydon attacked the near end in the first half and took the lead in the 29th minute. Willie Lillington got on the end of John Myatt’s free-kick from the right and scored with a downward header that slipped through keeper Mark Russell’s hands at the foot of the left-hand post.

Lillington doubled Croydon’s lead in the 40th minute. He received a harmless-looking throughball and rounded Russell before finishing with a low shot from the right-side of the area helped in my defender John Crouch.

A deep left-wing free-kick played forward from in front of the dugouts led to Hampton halving the deficit in the 69th minute. The ball was only partially cleared and Craig Reilly hit home a low shot from the edge of the area.

Hampton salvaged a point in the 81st minute with a goal from a harmless attack. Robin Lewis lifted the ball over the advancing keeper Andrew Little who had left his line to block.

This was my third visit to The Beveree Stadium to follow the two previous games I’d seen at the ground in February 1990 and September 1996.

This was my first game since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Penn and Tylers Green were the better side throughout the game, scoring a goal in each half and missing a penalty. They took a 13th minute lead through Damian Roscoe who, from Matt Hutton’s corner, sent a first-time diving header to the keeper’s right from eight yards out. In the 26th minute, Shorie Ali had the opportunity to double the lead but drove a penalty high over the bar. Roscoe struck again in the 78th minute. Simon Walker sent a free-kick forward from ten yards inside his own half and found Ali free on the right. Ali centred to Neil Canning who saw an initial shot saved and Roscoe followed up to net by the left-hand post.

The ground on Tilehouse Lane in Denham, close to the junction with the A412 was fully roped off on a larger playing field also used for cricket. The pitch ran lengthways with the changing rooms behind the near goal and Martin Baker attacked the far end during the first half.

Martin Baker (sky blue and black stripes / black / black): 1. Eddie Shanley, 2. Guy Richards, 3. Mark Duke, 4. Roger Carpenter, 5. Andy Miller, 6. Trent Strutton, 7. Steve Robinson, 8. Banstead (14th with 46 points from 31 games) hosted Leighton Town (7th with 59 points from 37 games) in what their seventh game in 16 days. The home side played the better football though their goalkeeper Scott Tarr produced the ‘Champagne moment’ of the game. He produced a brilliant save in the 33rd minute to deny Paul Frith a goal. The Leighton player, who incidentally arrived late and didn’t take the field until the 7th minute, shook hands with Tarr before the corner was taken.

This return trip to Merland Rise was my first since ‘ticking’ the ground in 1990. Looking at the pitch from the players’ entrance in one corner, there was a stand containing seats over on the far touchline with small areas of covered standing on the near touchline and behind the near goal.

This was very much an even game with visitors Fakenham Town having the better chances. Soham replied to the visitors’ opening goal within 60 seconds to claim a point and extend their unbeaten run to seven games.

After a goalless first hour, Fakenham took a deserved lead in the 63rd minute. Richard Dye was on hand to net at close range after Wayne Coe had knocked down Darren Gould’s right-wing corner.

Soham immediately bounced back with an equaliser within 60 seconds. Paul Allen, on the right, played the ball into the area where Andy Morton lobbed the goalkeeper from 15 yards out.

Hullbridge, playing into a strong wind in the first half, took the lead against the run of play and went on to add two more second-half goals to record a comfortable win.

Attacking the changing rooms end in the first half [left to right in relation to the stand], Hullbridge (in 8th position with 20 points from 15 games) took the lead in the 11th minute. Scott Syrett hit home a dipping 25-yard right-foot drive after a right-wing corner was only partially cleared.

Ilford (11th position with 14 points from 15 games) made a double substitution at half-time but fell further behind in the 54th minute. Gary Ewers capitalised on a slip by Steve Osibote inside the ‘D’ and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Craig Lewis.

Hullbridge made sure of the points with a third goal scored in the 63rd minute. Khan Stephens sent a powerful right-foot drive into the top-left corner from the right corner of the area.

As the scoreline suggests, Maldon dominated this match and recorded a comfortable win over visitors Cornard United.

The Wallace Binder Ground on Park Drive is a relatively new stadium opened in 1994. The pitch has hard standing all round the perimeter with seats in a stand in front of the clubhouse. Opposite is an area of covered standing and some uncovered terrace steps behind the left-hand goal.

Maldon took a second-minute lead when Scott Witney met a cross from the right and sent a downward header into the bottom-left corner from eight yards out.

The visitors responded and equalised in the 12th minute. David Gipp received an indirect free-kick taken on the edge of the six-yard box and drove home through a crowd of players.

Steve Card regained the lead for Maldon in first-half stoppage time. He finished a surging run from midfield with a low shot from 10 yards as Cornard goalkeeper Steve Featherstone left his line to attempt a save.

The lead was extended just after the hour mark through Alex Fiddes who hooked the ball past Featherstone from six yards out following a run to the right bye-line and cross by Witney.

Potton of the uhlsport United Counties League Premier Division progressed into the Bedfordshire Senior Cup semi-finals to face either Wootton Blue Cross or Kempston Rovers at the expense of ICIS League Division 2 side Leighton Town. Dave Fenton’s low angled shot that was heading wide of the right-hand post struck Dean Chapman, sending the ball into the opposite corner wrong-footing keeper James Heeps. Wootton got back into the game with a 38th-minute equaliser. David Robertson drove the ball past Wellingborough goalkeeper Stuart Knight from six yards out after John Willetts headed back Kevin Moul’s deep cross from near to the left corner flag. Kick-off: 2-00 pm
Admission: £1; Programme: 50p (28 pages)
Attendance: 50 (headcount)
Weather: cold, drizzle

A short trip to see hosts Walton Casuals record their first league draw of the season on my first visit to the ground.

Both sides have been struggling this season and went into this game languishing near the foot of the 20-team table. Casuals (18 points from 21 games) occupied 17th position with visitors Merstham (17 points from 20 games) immediately below with a game in hand.

Casuals, looking for a third straight win, took the lead in the 16th minute. Danny Nicholson received a short pass from Roland Hockin and hit a low angled 15-yard shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Merstham were allowed back into the game after the break by complacent play from the home side and equalised midway through the second half. Reserve team keeper Steve Trippt, deputising for regular Steve Crozier, dropped a bouncing throughball under pressure from attackers Andy Smith and Justin Jones. Smith was left with the simple task of walking the ball into an empty net.

The Franklyn Road Sports Ground boasted a stand in front of the clubhouse and a fully railed-off pitch. There were no floodlights.

Feltham 2 Bedfont 3

Courage Combined Counties League
At: Feltham Sports Arena
Kick-off: 3-00 pm
Admission: £2-50; Programme: 50p (24 pages)
Attendance: 60 (headcount)
Weather: very cold, dry

Feltham’s artificial pitch was the only destination of a very cold afternoon, even though I’d previously visited the ground in September 1991.

Both Feltham (9th position with 29 points from 18 games) and Bedfont (4th position with 37 points from 21 games) are enjoying a decent season, with Bedfont being a form side gaining 15 points from their last six games.

Befont missed a host of first-half chances before the closing stages proved to be eventful for Feltham’s Paul Edghill. He put his side in front in the 38th minute with a close-range shot from Anthony Clarke’s pull-back from the right. But, having already been booked, Edghill received a second yellow card two minutes later for dissent.

In the 59th minute, the ten men of Feltham doubled their advantage through Lee Channell. He received a throughball from Jimmy Moussi and hit a right foot drive on the run from 10 yards which Andrew Hoare got his hands to.

Bedfont started their eventually successful comeback with a long-range strike from Phil George who sent a 25-yard right-foot drive into the bottom-right corner following a poor clearance by Colin Ryder. They levelled tings up midway through the second half when Derek Brown, put clear by Bobby Watson, finished with a low shot from 15 yards out.

The winner came in the 76th minute to complete Bedfont’s comeback. David Logie was on target with a low right-foot drive from just eight yards out.
