All the goals came in the second half at Rowley Park as Stafford MSHD gained the local bragging rights with a victory over Rangers Reserves by the odd goal in three. Following a goalless first half, MSHD took the lead just 57 seconds into the second half when Richard Garner lobbed Rangers goalkeeper Billy Turley from the edge of the area. Garner doubled his side’s lead in the 69th minute. He finished off a well-worked move with a low shot from eight yards out. Rangers grabbed a consolation goal during the last ten minutes. Darren Newman crossed from the left and Andy Thompson headed home past Pete Ingram at the far post.

The game wrapped up a busy footballing year for me of 176 games which produced a total of 551 goals.

Defending the southern Western Road end in the first half, visitors Stanton took a 20th minute lead. Dean Brunell hit a powerful right-foot volley from the edge of the area past Daryl Beeston into the bottom-right corner from Kevin Parkes’ right-wing cross.

The home side levelled things up just after the half-hour through Dave Harris who headed home Dave Wall’s deep right-wing cross.

Mickleover’s winner came in the 76th minute. Phil Bailey fouled Mick Taplin inside the area and Taplin himself sent the resulting penalty into the right-side of the net.

The football pitch at the Ypres Lodge Ground occupied part of the larger cricket ground’s outfield. With no lights, both sides of the pitch were railed off with the ends roped off.
