Rye United went into the game in second position in the Premier Division table with 42 points from 18 games. Visitors Thames Poly, once a member of the higher Kent League, occupied a midtable 9th position in the 14-team division having gained 22 points from 24 games.

Thames took the lead in the 11th minute. Ben Sinclair won a tackle 25 yards out to set up a chance for Ritch Kent who hit a low drive from the edge of the area into the bottom-right corner of the net.

Title-chasing Rye got back on level terms just after the hour mark through Scott Price. He ran through the Poly defence before lifting the ball over keeper Tony Ball from 15 yards out.

The game looked like ending in a draw until scored a very late winner. There was a suspicion of offside when Neil Winton latched on to a pass from Neil Cloute and finished with a low shot into the bottom-left corner from 15 yards out.
