As the family went to the Newcastle Metro Centre so I headed a few miles east to Ryton. The visitors Whitley Bay, the current FA Vase holder, brought the famous trophy with them, and it was photo opportunity not to be missed. Heavy rain before kick-off preceded a goalless first half of few scoring opportunities though Ryton did miss a penalty a few minutes before the interval. But Whitley Bay took the lead soon after the restart and added a second goal to get their league season off to a winning start.
