A first look at Stafford Town this season and, at the same time, a first trip to Goodrich’s Sports Ground in daylight.

The opening day on Saturday didn’t go that well for Stafford as they went down 2-0 at home to Bewdley Town. Goodrich’s game also finished 2-0 but they came out on top at Dudley Town. So, in the embryonic league table, Goodrich occupied 8th position and Stafford in 17th position in the 22-team division behind table toppers Bustleholme.

The Goodrich Sports Ground is a delightful venue consisting of two pitches on what used to be a cricket ground. The main stadium pitch, furthest away from the factory was fully railed off with handstanding all round. While the pavilion was impressive, the unique stand had something that no other ground I can recall having. Containing 126 seats (six rows of 21 seats in two blocks), it was built into a old trailer still bearing the ‘long vehicle’ sign at one end.
