This was the first Reserve team game of the season as this cup competition has changed from round-robin to knockout format due to the severe weather and fixture congestion. Rangers boss Andy Bates named a few first-team squad players and drafted in others from Stafford Town and Stone Old Alleynians including Dave Woodvine and Paul McMahon. Sporting fielded their first team and took lead on the quarter hour mark through Shaun May. Adam McMahon converted a chance created by his brother Paul to level things up in the 38th minute. Joe Brookes regained the lead for Sporting from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute and they held on despite Woodvine heading against the bar. I picked up a copy of last Saturday’s first-team programme and learned the sad news of the death of former Secretary Peter Wall at the age of 67.
